Region Midt

About the project

NEXT is Region Midtjylland’s in-house developed system that supports the entire sterile workflow of surgical equipment across hospitals.

My role was to design the solution to be user-friendly and meet the needs of healthcare professionals. Additionally, I played a key role in developing a comprehensive design system, ensuring consistency and quality across digital solutions.

By applying a structured and solution-oriented approach, I contributed to building a scalable system that streamlined processes and improved user experience. My high-fidelity prototypes were crucial in rapidly testing and refining the core elements of the system.

  • Role: Senior UX Designer
  • Tools: Figma, FigJam, ProtoPie, Pen & Paper, Screen Recording Tools
  • Methods: User Interviews, Usability Testing, Prototyping, Iterative Design

Key challenges

  1. Complex and fragmented workflows:
    • Hospital staff struggled with inconsistent processes across different departments.
    • The existing system lacked a unified design, making it difficult for users to navigate efficiently.

  2. Need for a scalable design system:
    • The system needed to support multiple applications across hospitals.
    • Ensuring consistency while allowing flexibility for different use cases was a key challenge.

Design Process

Research & Insights

Interviews and usability tests with hospital staff to understand their workflows. Identified key pain points related to system navigation, task efficiency, and error prevention.

Prototyping & Testing:

Created high-fidelity prototypes in Figma to visualize and validate solutions. Used iterative testing to refine features based on real user feedback.

Solutions

A Unified and User-Friendly Interface

Designed a consistent UI that made navigation across hospitals seamless.

Introduced clear visual hierarchies and intuitive interaction patterns to reduce user errors.

A Scalable Design System

Developed a modular design system that ensured consistency across applications.

Implemented reusable UI components to streamline future development.

Additionally, the use of design tokens, variables, and a ready-to-go theme made it significantly easier for developers to implement the designs.

This approach reduced development time, minimized inconsistencies, and allowed for faster iterations when adjustments were needed.

Results

  • Successfully implemented across multiple hospitals, improving efficiency and reducing errors.

  • The design system is now the foundation for future digital solutions within Region Midtjylland.

  • Much faster developer implementation because theme and design tokens were clear and understandable.

  • User feedback:
    • Improved usability and faster task completion.
    • Increased adoption of the system due to its intuitive design.

Learnings

This project highlighted the importance of scalability in UX design and demonstrated the power of prototyping in refining complex workflows. Involving users throughout the process ensured that the final solution met their needs effectively.
